Here at Katie Bell Physiotherapy & Wellness we are extremely fortunate to have the services of an extremely well-trained and experienced MLD specialist. Trained both here in the UK and at the renowned Dr Vodder School in Austria, where this specialised technique originated, Jackie Buchanan has studied all aspects of this effective treatment and is incredibly passionate about helping clients with specific problems relating to lymphatic disorders.

MLD offers a host of benefits for a multitude of different symptoms and conditions. To name but a few:

> Relieving fluid retention, such as swollen ankles, swollen legs, or puffy eyes.
> Aiding in the improvement of digestive conditions, such as IBS or constipation.
> Assisting in the successful healing of broken bones, torn ligaments, sprains and any other such injury or trauma.
> Aiding in the improvement of chronic conditions, such as sinusitis, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, acne and other skin conditions.
> Instrumental in the treatment of lymphedema and other conditions arising from venous insufficiency.
> Success from such treatment, however, is dependent on such factors as the rhythm, sequence and the direction of the strokes applied by the therapist. Mistakes in the technique will mean that the treatment will be less effective. As such, it is vitally important that you receive specialist treatment.

I’ve been working for Katie Bell Physio since 2016 and am a fully qualified MLD therapist having trained here in the UK and at the renowned Dr Vodder School in Austria, where this specialised technique originated. This intensive training allowed me to study all aspects of this incredibly worthwhile and effective treatment, to include Manual Lymphatic Drainage and Decongestive/Compression Therapy. I have been working with clients who have lymphoedema, using MLD to improve their condition leading to a better quality of life. I’ve also worked with clients post operatively to speed up the healing process by using MLD.

I enjoy meeting new clients and I try to help them not just with physical problems but also emotional ones too. If people walk out of my door feeling better than when they arrived then I have done a good job. My desire to help clients with specific problems relating to lymphatic disorders evolved from my training over 30 years ago as a Massage Therapist and Further Education Teacher. This gave me a broad range of experience both hands-on and teaching in massage, anatomy and physiology. I am passionate about the more beneficial and challenging medical aspect that this treatment offers.

I feel valued as a member of the team at Katie Bell which is important to me. I feel supported by my colleagues and there is a very positive vibe at the clinic which our clients pick up on and embrace.

Qualifications, Achievements & Relevant Experience Vodder Manual Lymphatic Drainage CDT – Training in Ludlow and at the Vodder clinic in Austria 5 years experience as a Manual Lymphatic Drainage Therapist Using MLD to improve clients with lymphoedema Working with clients post operatively to speed up the healing process by using MLD Experience in Massage Therapy Hobbies, Hidden Talents & More Info Hobbies outside of work include cooking, entertaining friends and family. I love singing (in the car!), attending concerts, and going on holiday. I also like painting and sketching.

As a child I didn’t think too much about a career, I wanted to have a happy family life for my kids like I was lucky enough to have. Having completed a beauty therapy course in the eighties and also taught beauty, I decided to retrain after having my children to become an MLD therapist which gives me more job satisfaction.

I’ve been with Katie Bell Physio from the start of the business in 2014. I qualified in Physiotherapy from Bradford University in 2007 achieving a 1st Class honours degree. This was preceded by the completion of a Sport and Exercise Science degree at Leeds Metropolitan University in 2004.

I have over 10 years’ experience working in Pelvic health (Obstetrics and Gynaecology) across a spectrum of settings, from large teaching hospital departments to remote community based clinics. I have expanded my skills to include acupuncture, myofascial release, and professional coaching alongside classical pelvic health skills which reflects my combined approach to physiotherapy. Since qualifying as a Pilates Instructor with the APPI Health group I now work as a Master Trainer delivering education to other health professionals in clinical Pilates.

I am a full POGP member and work with them as part of the Research review team, supporting the work of the POGP to facilitate pelvic health physiotherapists.

I love not just only helping women find the practical solutions to their pelvic and obstetric health challenges, but also their unique recipe for wellness. So often in clinic I hear that patients didn’t realise there was so much they could do to impact their symptoms. When they leave having taken control of their health, they change in every way. I love the moment a person tells me that they are feeling better but what has pleased them more is the unexpected part- they now know their body better too. There’s a lot of power in that, not just the one quick fix but embracing your health for life.

Katie Bell Physio is a powerhouse of passion and vision. We’re not just a group of individual clinicians but a team that links up, which is what makes our clients experience so special. I really enjoy being surrounded by likeminded people who help me to pursue the best for our clients. We can create treatment exactly the way each person needs, which is after all exactly what we all deserve.

I am one of the sports massage therapists here at KB physio and I joined the team in April of 2024. I am also a Pilates instructor so you might find me covering in the studio from time to time here too.

There isn’t a sport that I haven’t played over the years and I started Pilates at the insistence of my other half as a way of increasing my strength and preventing injury. It really does work! After attending a Pilates retreat in Kefalonia, I realised the benefits of Pilates for all and began my instructor training. Already a ski instructor and athletics coach, Pilates complimented my existing skills set and my new found knowledge and love of anatomy meant that sports massage was the next natural step.

Hobbies, Hidden Talents, and More: I am a born and bred Londoner but despite now living ‘up north’ for longer than I lived in London for, I still can’t shake the accent! Sheffield is a very special place and you’ll often find me out running up and down the hills and dales of the Peak District or pounding the streets of the City Centre. I enjoy running further afield too, competing in the Comrades Ultra marathon in South Africa was a life changing experience and a whole new level of mental as well as a physical challenge. My race calendar is looking fairly quiet this year so I’ll be keen to talk about any new runs during your massage. I previously lived in the Italian Alps when I was a ski instructor so I think the peaks reminds me of that, although my Italian is a little rusty now.

I also still play hockey weekly for a Sheffield club and previously was chairwoman of my university hockey club. I also like to use my free time to run and go to the gym.

I’ve been with Katie Bell Physio since 2021. I decided to specialise in the field of musculoskeletal Physiotherapy as a junior Physiotherapist in 2005. Since then I have completed post graduate courses to develop my skills and over the years I have treated a wide variety of people with all manner of different problems.

I have been a Physiotherapist since 2005 – how time flies! I like that there’s always opportunities to learn and develop my skills and I get great satisfaction from helping people achieve their health goals. Whether it’s recovering from an injury, managing a long term problem or supporting someone to be stronger for longer. I really enjoy working with people to improve their pain and give them the confidence, and ability to do what they want to do when they want to do it.

Katie Bell Physio is such a friendly place to work. When I first started I received lots of welcome messages which made me feel very comfortable. I like that KB Physiotherapy really values the local community. The staff here really do care and go that extra mile for their clients.

Qualifications, Achievements & Relevant Experience: MSc in Rehabilitation Science from Glasgow Caledonian University, 2004 5 years experience working in the NHS in Edinburgh Acupuncture Qualified, 2010 APPI Pilates Qualified Chair Based Exercise Qualified PSI (Postural Stability Instructor) Qualified Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist since 2005 Hobbies, Hidden Talents & More Info Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my 3 children. We enjoy camping and the great outdoors. We recently tried abseiling and canoeing – we had a great day and by cheating my daughter and I won the canoe race against my 2 sons. I do spend a lot of time taking my kids to their various sporting activities and embarrassing them (so they tell me) when I cheer them on. I enjoy reading when I have a quiet moment and I try to keep myself fit by participating in HIIT classes – I do like that post workout buzz.

As a working mum with 3 kids I am busy most of the time. I love being Physiotherapist, however when I was at school I wanted to become a Vet. I wasn’t successful getting into vet school so I graduated with an Honours degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Edinburgh in 2000. I used to participate in a lot of sport, particularly athletics and through injury I learnt about Physiotherapy. After graduation I worked as Physiotherapy assistant for a year in a Mental Health hospital – I loved this so much I decided to go back to University to become a Physiotherapist. As for a hidden talent, I don’t have one. I enjoy singing but my kids reassure me that it’s not a talent.
